Land Rover 88 Serie 2 (1958)
The Land Rover had been a sales success since its introduction in 1948. The first model series was then built until spring 1958.
Our car is a very early example (No. 856) of the second series. This second series was only built for a total of three years until autumn 1961. In the first six months of the second series, the two-litre engines from the first series were still being installed. Only 1,703 cars were affected by this.
Later, these cars were often converted to later specifications. The car presented here is therefore an extremely rare example due to its originality and condition.
The very early history of this Land Rover is unknown. However, it appears to have come to Germany in the late 1970s and was then stored in dry conditions for around 25 years. After that, an initial attempt was made to restore it, but this was abandoned due to a lack of time. The current owner acquired the car in 2020 and then completely restarted its restoration – the results of which we can now admire.
In well over 1,000 hours of work, the car was restored to its current condition, which is better than new, without compromise. In addition, approximately €25,000 was invested in parts and contracted work such as painting.
As part of the restoration, the frame was refurbished, the bodywork was stripped of paint and rebuilt, and all technical parts were overhauled. There is no area that has not been restored to the highest standard. The Land Rover is painted in the original Land Rover colour ‘Dark Grey’ and here, too, attention to detail was paramount: for example, all bodywork irregularities caused by rivets were left completely authentic and not artificially smoothed out.
Since the restoration work was completed, the car has been driven 162 miles (261 kilometres) for adjustment purposes.
A Land Rover that is suitable for a collection, as a classic counterpart to a modern Defender, or simply for experiencing pure off-road driving.
The Land Rover is a colectable car because...
- It is a very rare model;
- It has been extensively restored;
- It is very authentic and yet better than new
The car is available for a test drive here in Bad Essen.
